You spray your perfume, and a few hours later you can barely smell it? Most of the time this is not about a weak fragrance — it is about how you apply it. The good news: a few small habits can make your perfume last noticeably longer, sometimes twice as long. Here are the tips that actually work.
Why does perfume fade so fast?
Fragrance needs something to cling to so it can diffuse slowly. Dry skin, lacking natural oils, lets scent molecules evaporate quickly. On top of that, concentration, body temperature, weather and storage all directly affect longevity. Once you understand this, you know exactly what to adjust.
Prep your skin before spraying
This is the step most people skip — and it is the most important one.
- Spray right after a shower, while pores are open and skin is still slightly damp, so the scent absorbs and clings better.
- Moisturise with an unscented (or matching) cream or lotion before spraying. Hydrated skin holds scent far longer than dry skin.
- For very dry skin, a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the spray points creates a base that helps the scent last.
Spray the right pulse points
Pulse points are warmer, which keeps the scent diffusing throughout the day:
- Wrists
- Behind the ears and the sides of the neck
- Inner elbows
- Behind the knees
Do not rub your wrists together after spraying. The friction and heat break the structure of the notes, making the top notes flash off and the scent feel less rounded.
Layering — building scent in layers
Layering means combining several products in the same scent family to extend longevity:
- Use a shower gel and body lotion in the same scent family as your perfume
- Spray a little onto clothing or a scarf (test on light fabrics first to avoid staining)
- Mist your hair lightly — hair holds scent very well, but spray through a comb rather than directly, since alcohol can dry it out
Choose the right concentration
Oil concentration largely determines how long a scent lasts:
- Eau de Cologne / Eau de Toilette: light, fresh, lasts 2–4 hours
- Eau de Parfum: higher concentration, lasts 6–10 hours
- Extrait / Parfum: the most concentrated, lasts all day
If you want a scent that stays with you, favour eau de parfum or higher. Every ARLY fragrance is a high-concentration eau de parfum, designed for lasting wear while staying elegant.
Store your perfume properly
Perfume is a sensitive product. Poor storage can spoil a scent within months:
- Keep it somewhere dry, away from direct sunlight and heat
- Avoid the bathroom — humidity and temperature swings degrade the fragrance
- Keep the cap on tightly and open the bottle as little as possible to limit air exposure
Adjust for season and weather
Hot weather makes scent diffuse faster and stronger, so spray sparingly. In the cold, scent rises more slowly, so you can apply a touch more. Warm skin always diffuses fragrance better than cold skin — which is why the same bottle smells different from season to season.
In closing
Lasting power is not magic; it is the sum of small habits: well-hydrated skin, the right spots, the right concentration and careful storage. Apply them consistently and you will find your favourite bottle staying with you far longer.
